17. Furstenberg Castle
Furstenberg Castle – Burg Fürstenberg Another UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Middle Rhine – the ruins of the castle Furstenberg in the district Mainz-Bingen.
It was erected in 1219 to protect the lands of the archbishopric of Cologne in the region.
Destroyed in 1689 by the French during the War of the Palatinate Succession and then not subjected to restoration. These plans were developed in the XIX century, but they have remained on paper.
